Often called one of the fastest sports in the world, Jai-Alai (pronounced Hi-Lie) is a very old handball sport that is somewhat similar to racket ball but played with wicker basket mitts called cestas or sestas. The sport originated in Spain centuries ago and debuted in the U.S. at the 1904 World's Fair. It caught on for a brief period in the 50s and 60s, but pretty much completely fell out of favor in this country by the 1980s. It's a strange and faddy sport, but we love these wicker cestas!
